Program Note:

Shorthanded was composed for the 2014 Hammer and Nail event with the percussion trio “Square Peg Round Hole” and choreographer Kate Anderson. The piece explores the manic process of creation when an artist is short on ideas. In the first section, an inkling of a musical idea emerges, but struggles to find its identity. After exhausting the first possibility, the piece erupts into a new frenetic section, which represents the hyper-focused mental state of creative flow. However, this manifestation quickly loses steam and the piece returns to the original idea.
